Marley Eternit awarded responsible sourcing certification
Leading roofing and cladding manufacturer Marley Eternit has received third party certification to BES 6001, ‘Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products’ by the BSI.
Demonstrating the company’s continued commitment to sustainable buildings, Marley Eternit’s UK manufactured clay and concrete roof tiles, and fibre cement slates and profiled sheets have achieved a ‘Good’ performance rating, making it one of the first UK roofing product manufacturers to attain this accolade for its range of roofing products.
Gavin White, Marketing Project Manager for Marley Eternit, said: “We are delighted to be recognised for the investment we have put into improving the way we source, manufacture and supply our products and services.”
As well as adding to Marley Eternit’s ISO 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001 accredited management systems for quality, environment and health & safety, the certificate offers significant benefits to specifiers.
Gavin continued, “Using products that are responsibly sourced allows specifiers to deliver projects that achieve a higher number of credits within the BREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes certification schemes. The three credits gained through the use of our BRE ‘Green Guide to Specification’ generic A+ rated clay and concrete roof tiles and fibre cement slates and profiled sheets is now enhanced with the additional two points available for demonstrating a ‘Good’ rating for responsible sourcing.”
“The next few years will be very important in establishing responsible sourcing as a key criteria in product selection for construction projects. Through the ‘Strategy for Sustainable Construction’ there are already targets that come into effect this year for 25% of all construction products to be responsibly sourced. On top of this, the UK Contractors Group has set a target for 100% of its products to be responsibly sourced by 2015. This highlights the ever-growing significance of the standard and why we feel it’s a vital addition to offer clients, specifiers and users of our products.”
BES 6001 certification is awarded to manufacturers that can demonstrate responsible sourcing throughout the whole lifecycle of a product, from initial mining, extraction or formulation of the raw materials through to product design, manufacturing and processing, installation, use and re-use and recycling, until final replacement as well as the environmental and social impacts of its procurement through all stages of the supply chain
Gavin concluded: “As the certification is re-assessed each year, we have in place a long-term strategy of continuous improvement, with the intention to achieve even higher ratings in the future.”
