Lincoln - A clay pantile with the speed of Concrete
Lincoln is a new easy-to-fix clay pantile from the UK’s leading roofing systems manufacturer, Marley Eternit. Its traditional pantile appearance combined with a completely ‘open gauge’ makes Lincoln as easy to install as a standard concrete tile – saving time and money on site.
This traditional clay pantile can also be used down to a low minimum roof pitch of just 17.5°, ideal for a wide range of new roofing work, refurbishments and extension projects. In addition, Marley Eternit offers a comprehensive range of clay fittings and accessories that will enable you to install the roof according to the latest BS 5534 and NHBC fixing requirements.
So now you can achieve a traditional clay pantile roof in a fraction of the time.
Step 1 – Eaves ventilation
To ventilate the eaves, a 10mm or 25mm Universal eaves vent system can be used with Lincoln clay pantiles with a 2m x 6m continuous rafter roll.
Step 2 – Eaves Clip
All perimeter tiles should be fixed with a minimum of two mechanical fixings; head nailed with 38mm x 3.35mm aluminium clout head nails and clipped, using Lincoln eave clips nailed to the fascia board and located over the side lock of the tile. A comb filler strip should be fitted above the eaves vent strip to prevent the ingress of birds and vermin.
Step 3 – Verge clip
Lincoln clay pantiles should be laid straight bonded from the right hand side of the roof -working right to left. The right hand verge tiles can be head nailed and fixed with a Lincoln verge clip, nailed to the batten using two 25mm x 3.35mm aluminium nails in addition to a traditional mortar finish, to meet the latest fixing requirements.
Step 4 – Tile laying
Lincoln clay pantiles have a completely open gauge, so the tiles can be laid in a similar way to concrete roof tiles, without the need for any special fittings or tile cutting, and can be installed to a minimum pitch of just 17.5°. The pantiles also have a shunt of 1mm-5mm so roofers can lay them with an average 2mm shunt, this means the tiles can be open or closed as required.
Step 5 – Nailing and SoloFix
As a minimum, all tiles at rafter pitches of 45° and over should each be mechanically fixed with at least one 38mm x 3.35mm aluminium clout head nails or tail clipped. For rafter pitches greater than 55°, each tile should be nailed and clipped. To achieve this easily, Lincoln is fully compatible with SoloFix, Marley Eternit’s one-piece clip and nail solution, which can save up to 30% on traditional clipping times.
Step 6 – Left Hand Verge
The left hand verge can be finished with a Lincoln left hand verge tile. This has a double roll, can be head nailed using 38mm x 3.35mm aluminium clout head nails and clipped using Lincoln left hand verge clip and nails.
Step 7 – Valley
The valley can be installed with Marley Eternit’s Universal GRP Valley system - suitable for rafter pitches of 17.5°-60° and can accommodate a 20° difference in pitch either side of the valley. Small pieces of cut tiles at the hip and valley can be secured using Marley Eternit retention clips.
Step 8 – Hips
Hips can be fixed with Lincoln 375mm third round clay hip tiles and Marley Eternit’s HipFixing packs for use with traditional mortar or Marley Eternit’s Universal HipFast system, with Lincoln third round hip end tiles, to provide a low maintenance mortar-free mechanically fixed solution.
Step 9 – Ridges
Universal RidgeFast can be used with Lincoln 375mm clay half round ridges and 100mm x 4.8mm screws for simple and rapid installation, which complies with the new fixing requirements and can be used to provide 5,000mm2/m continuous ventilation at the roof apex. A half round ridge end tile is available for use at the gable end. Marley Eternit also offers security fixing kits for traditional mortar bedded ridges.
