Eden Project
Antislip Plus Decking

Marley Eternit non slip timber decking has passed the test of time at the Eden project. Tens of millions of feet have walked over Marley Eternit's JB Antislip Plus® decking since it was installed at the Eden Project a decade ago but the surface is still as good as new says the centre’s management.

Since it opened in May 2000 The Eden Project has welcomed over 12 million visitors and it continues to blossom as a major tourist attraction and educational centre, inspiring visitors to live in a more environmentally sustainable way. Paul Stone, hard landscape manager at Eden, said: “The JB timber decking used at Eden has made an important contribution to our excellent safety record. It provides us with attractive and long lasting decking that enables visitors to enjoy our facility.” The JB Antislip Plus® inserts were fitted into Marley Eternit decking boards and installed on steps and walkways in the Rainforest Biome.

The product was chosen to reduce the risk of visitors slipping in the area where both water and leaf sap drip onto the walkways, potentially creating a slip hazard. Billed as “the largest jungle in captivity” the 15,590m2 Rainforest Biome recreates the steamy humid tropical regions of the world and includes tropical plants, cultivated areas and a huge crashing waterfall, with birds and insects flying freely. The average temperature in the Biome is 24ºC and humidity is maintained at 90 per cent, making walking surfaces slippery under foot.

The JB decking range used for The Eden Project is a structural timber deck board manufactured from kiln dried European Redwood, carefully selected to BS 4978:2007 strength class C16. It is vacuum preservative treated and is unique in carrying a 25 year guarantee against wood rotting fungi and insect attack.

JB timber decking has been successfully specified on many projects for high levels of slip resistance, ease of maintenance, accessibility for wheelchair users and high levels of visitor traffic. All boards meet BS7976 with full FSC and PEFC chain of custody.

Boards can be castellated or smooth with either two or three antislip inserts depending on the project’s requirements. Natural decking has the lowest embodied energy of any mainstream building material and is a managed material to deliver a more sustainable product, enhancing the environmental credentials of the project.

JB Antislip Plus® and CitiDeck timber decking provides complete peace of mind with a comprehensive 25 year guarantee. Technical support is provided by Marley Eternit throughout the lifecycle of the project, from specification with the client or landscape architect, to advice for the contractor on correct installation.
