Barnard Castle uses JB Antislip Plus timber decking
Antislip Plus Decking
JB Antislip Plus® timber decking from Marley Eternit has been specified on the new £5m multi activity and community centre on the 15 acre site of natural beauty in rural Barnard Castle.
A world class facility, the Teesdale Community Resources ‘Hub’ offers young people people aged 13-19 the opportunity to take part in a range of indoor activities and a huge variety of outdoor pursuits.
The Hub is split into 10 different activity ‘zones’ to enable the youngsters to develop practical skills. The exceptional facilities include drama and dance studios, music recording and rehearsal areas, art rooms, media rooms, BMX track, high ropes, skateboarding bowl, and a purpose built 2 acre flat water venue.
The ‘Splash’ zone provides access and training for water sports and also has a wetland environment which allows visitors to explore nature first hand and experience the tranquility of the natural environment.
Each zone had very specific requirements and challenges in the specification of the products to ensure the facility was safe and accessible for the local community.
JB Antislip Plus® timber decking was installed in and around the wetland areas and wildlife reserve where the risk of slips and trips is high due to the boardwalks proximity to the water and overhanging vegetation. The jetty was supported by timber piles.
Clugston Construction was the main contractor appointed to deliver this exciting 2400m2 project and, after discussion on the suitability of the originally specified solid oak decking, samples were presented to North Yorkshire-based Arlene McIntosh Landscape Architects who decided that JB Antislip Plus® timber decking presented a safe and cost effective solution.
The European redwood decking, treated using Osmose Naturewood to BS8417:2011, was supplied with two grey JB Antislip Plus® inserts to minimise the risk of slips and trips. The decking will weather naturally to blend in and complement the boardwalk’s natural surroundings.
JB Antislip Plus® timber decking has been successfully specified on many wetland and boardwalk projects for high levels of slip resistance, ease of maintenance, and suitability for high levels of visitor traffic.
All boards meet BS7976 with full FSC and PEFC chain of custody. Boards can be castellated or smooth with either two or three antislip inserts depending on the project’s requirements.
