London Care Partnership’s (LCP) Alexandra Gardens Care Home in Hounslow offers specialist residential support for young people up to 35 years old through the provision of platforms to help individuals on a journey to greater independence and in preparation for the transition to supported living.
The annex is the newest part of the centre and was constructed to create six single-storey apartments. Although it adjoins the main building, it is set in its own little woodland enclave surrounded by trees and has a very rural feel – even though it is in one of the busiest boroughs of London.
The challenge for LCP was to design an apartment block to the high standard of specification required to fully support the needs of its residents – whilst creating a harmonious and calming environment that allows young adults with a range of issues to feel safe and comfortable – which underpins their transition to a more independent life. Shingles were chosen as an essential material as part of a wider objective to ensure the building blended in beautifully with its environment.
Marley Eternit is the UK’s leading supplier of shingles and shakes and is one of only a few companies outside Canada and the USA to achieve the much-coveted membership of the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau (CSSB). It works closely with the CSSB to ensure the highest standards of quality and full compliance of shingles that originate in the forests of British Columbia and complete their journeys when they are fixed to the roofs of homes and buildings in the UK.
JB Shingles also have one of the lowest carbon footprints of any widely used building product because they are so light for transport, demonstrate properties such as thermal performance and weather beautifully over a number of years to a silvery grey.
Marley Eternit always advises that a clear preservative treatment, MicroPro®, is used to retain the natural look of cedar and to ensure the shingles’ long life – which is backed up by a 40-year guarantee.
Cliff Hamilton from LCP is a huge fan of shingles and has used them on a number of projects – both for the company and on other building projects. He said: “I would chose shingles everytime because you cannot beat natural products for both their beauty and performance in transforming a development and creating something that sits very well in its environment.
“The whole experience of Alexandra Gardens is critical in supporting the residents in making the transition to a more independent life, and the shingles play a huge role in creating a calming and harmonious natural environment.”
