Project name: Hereford livestock market
Product: Profile 6 - Natural Grey
Contractor: Willmott Dixon
Client: Hereford livestock market
Finding the right roof was fundamental in ensuring the best conditions for both visitors and animals at the new Hereford Livestock Market.
The £7m building project specified steel sheets in the original plans but concerns were soon raised about the potential reverberation and noise from wind, heavy rain and hail causing distress to the animals. In addition to this, the steel sheets would also have been susceptible to corrosion; caused by heat and moisture from the animals’ slightly acidic breath condensing on the relatively cooler underside of the roof.
In place of the steel sheets, Marley Eternit fibre cement Profile 6 sheets were chosen. The density of the fibre cement minimised reverberation and, with no metallic content, had an installed life expectancy of at least 50 years - even in this aggressive environment.
It also provided a solution to reduce condensation. Fibre cement Profile 6 has the ability to absorb up to 25 per cent of its dry weight in moisture and then dissipate it in more favourable conditions, which reduces the amount of condensation dripping from the roof, creating a healthier internal environment.
In addition, the thermal properties of fibre cement reduce the occurrence of freezing condensate forming on the underside of the roof on cold winter nights. This again reduced the amount of water dripping from the roof as the condensation melts.
The Marley Eternit profile sheeting was installed by Herefordshire-based Collins Design and Build Ltd. A passive ventilation system was also incorporated into the roof using Marley Eternit’s fibre cement ridge pieces in a raised design.
Market Director Richard Hyde said: “The new building looks absolutely fantastic and puts us among the top 10 markets within the UK. Our volume of sales has increased significantly within the first few weeks of opening.”
Marley Eternit is the only UK manufacturer of fibre cement profiled sheeting. British made for British farmers, our wide range of products and ventilation systems are better for animal health and welfare, providing excellent noise and thermal insulation, reduced condensation and resistance to even the most extreme weather conditions.
