Correct batten size selection by roof covering

The type of roof covering and the joist span will impact the selection of batten size. Regardless of the application, BS-5534 graded battens should be used on all roofing applications. It is mandatory on all NHBC sites, if you are part of the competent roofer scheme, and when batten is being used as a secure foothold.

Batten sizes for slate roofs

The use of slate as a roof covering will always be installed double lap. Natural slate, either sized or random will require 50x25mm batten for both 450mm and 600mm joist spans. Fibre Cement or Concrete slates require 38x25mm batten for 450mm joist spans and 50x25mm batten for 600mm joist spans.

Batten sizes for tile roofs

Tiles can be installed both double or single lap and the choice will impact batten size. Clay and Concrete tiles will require 38x25mm batten for double lap applications. Single lap applications should use 38x25mm batten for 450mm joist spans and 50x25mm batten for 600mm joist spans.

JB-Red is the UK leading fully machine graded roofing batten to British Standard BS-5534. It is the only batten that has BBA accreditation, third party accreditation that goes further than the traditional quality system, but ensures the product is fit for purpose.
