The Dry Hip System is one of a range of solutions providing a neat, durable, mechanically fixed alternative to mortar bedding at the hip.

For use with concrete tiles and interlocking slates.

Compatible with Anglia, Ludlow Plus, Double Roman, Ludlow Major, Mendip, Duo Modern, Modern, Wessex and Plain Tiles.

The Marley Eternit  Dry Hip System provides a mechanically fixed, weathertight and attractive finish to the hip line without the use of mortar bedding. The hip tiles are secured to a PVC-u Hip Batten Section fixed to the hip tree or rafter, and utilises PVC- u Hip Unions to maintain compatibility with the Marley Eternit Dry Ridge System.

Authority
The Concrete Third Round and Modern Hip tiles are manufactured to comply with the requirements of BS EN 490 Concrete roofing tiles and fittings with BSI Kitemark Licence. The Marley Eternit Dry Hip System complies with the requirements of BS 5534 : for the mechanical fixing of Hip tiles.

Composition
The components of the System are manufactured from high durability PVC-u with closed cell rubber foam weathering strips. The Apex Capping unit is moulded from Styrosun® PVC. Fixing materials are made from high tensile stainless steel and durable aluminium.

Performance
The Marley Eternit  Dry Hip System may be used on all roof pitches up to a maximum of 45° provided the roof slopes intersect at 90° on plan. The System will also accommodate roof slopes of varying pitch either side of the hip, up to a 10° difference.

Compatibility
The Marley Eternit Dry Hip System is fully compatible with the Marley Ventilated Dry Ridge and Marley Eaves Ventilation Systems and can be used with all products in the Marley Eternit  Plain, Interlocking and Slate Ranges.

Description
* Extruded black PVC-u Hip Sections, 3m long (low or high profile to suit tile profile) are fixed to the timber hip tree or rafter using purpose-made PVC-u blocks and drive screws.
* A closed cell rubber foam strip, 3m long (low or high profile to suit tile profile) is located along each side of the Hip Section to provide weathering for the cut tiles.
* Raking cut tiles are mechanically secured to prevent slippage by using purpose-made head clips and tingle clips.
* A Block End Hip tile is fitted at the base of the hip and mechanically fixed.
* Each Hip tile is secured to the top of the PVC-u Hip Section with injection moulded PVC-u Hip Unions with neoprene rubber seals.
* The hip/ridge intersection is weathered with a Styrosun® PVC Apex Cap and is available in three sizes for roof pitches from 15° - 45°

Note: Hips with a plan angle 90° - 135°

Where hips have plan angles 90° - 135° on plan, it may be necessary to trim the downstand of the Block End Hip tile at the base of the hip to align with the eaves course of tiles. This should be done using a disc cutter, ensuring that all Health and Safety precautions are carried out.

At the apex of the hip, a purpose made Code 4/5 lead capping should be fabricated to fit over the three-way junction with the ridge (see Lead Sheet Association Lead Sheet Flashings Manual for guidance).

The edges of the lead cap should be secured using the appropriate Ridge/Hip union, ensuring that a slot is formed at each side of the cap to align with the location lugs of the Unions.

Notes

Fibre cement slates meet the strength requirements of BS EN 492, achieving an average bending moment greater than 50Nm/m (Class B). The slates also have a minimum density of 1700kg/m³ and a nominal thickness of 4mm.

The batch code printed onto the underside of the slates is in the following format:
Example: NT UG21WB 24/11/11 12.10 CE

NT = Type of Product (ie. Non asbestos technology)
UG21 = Product code
W = Manufacturing plant ID
B = Class (for bending moment)
24/11/11 = Date of manufacture
12.10 = Time of manufacture
CE = CE Mark

The effectiveness of the tile or slate to operate at the minimum recommended pitch and lap may be influenced by special circumstances. Guidance on pitch and lap should be obtained from the Technical Advisory Service for the following:
• Interlocking tiles and slates where the roof slope exceeds 6 metres in length and/or the site is rated to be in a severe exposure category.
• Double-lap fibre cement slates where the roof slope exceeds 6 metres in length (severe/very severe exposure) and 9 metres in length (sheltered/moderate exposure).

Note: Consideration should be given to sealing any cut edges to prevent potential efflorescence staining. Contact TAS for further details.
