Marley Eternit Clay Plain Tiles Make The Grade For Listed Manor House

More than 218,000 Acme double camber clay plain tiles in Burnt Flame were chosen to roof the manor house, following a strict specification process. The roof was a key feature of the original house and the colour and size of the tiles had to be carefully matched to retain the traditional appearance of the manor house in order to be approved by the local planning authority.

The striking manor house at Summers Place, Billingshurst, which dates back to 1865 and was previously Sotheby’s regional headquarters, takes centre stage of the development, with its complex roof which includes various gables, valleys and a feature turret at the rear.

The development includes 11 converted apartments in the manor house together with 23 new houses and apartments, along with Berkeley Homes Southern’s new regional offices, which have also been roofed using Marley Eternit’s Acme tiles in Burnt Flame to ensure that the style of the entire development blends well with the characteristics of the original manor house.

Pete Bland, senior planning and design manager for Berkeley Homes, comments:
“This is a really unique development with its mix of new build homes all centred around the historic manor house. When specifying the tiles for the roofs we had to ensure that they not only did justice to the original roof, but as the Manor House is a listed building, pass the stringent eyes of the local planning & conservation officers.

“We have worked with Marley Eternit many times before and have a number of projects in the pipe-line. When it comes to specifying traditional clay plain tiles, Marley Eternit would be our number one choice.”

Diana Bullock, campaign manager for Marley Eternit, continues:
“It was great to see the manor house at the centre piece of this development restored to its former glory and the rest of the scheme blending so well with their traditional surroundings. The use of Marley Eternit’s Acme double camber tiles in Burnt Flame allowed the traditional features and look of the manor house to be restored, whilst at the same time being suitable for the new build town houses, cottages, apartments and offices really bringing the development together.

“The Acme double camber range is part of an extensive choice of clay plain tiles offered by Marley Eternit. With 24 colours to choose from and excellent environmental credentials, our clay plain tiles range is an ideal choice for both new build and refurbishment projects alike.”
