Fibre cement creates optical illusion

An apartment block in Vienna is attracting the attention of architects across the continent for its use of fibre cement cladding to create an optical. In this article, Marley Eternit showcases the building and its innovative use of Textura fibre cement rainscreen cladding as a secondary façade .

‘Simply 11’, was designed as part of an urban flagship project to create high quality living spaces within a densely built district of Vienna.

The key to the unusual design of this eight-storey block of 80 apartments is the creation of a secondary frontage using Textura fibre cement rainscreen cladding. This frontage creates continuous ‘loggias’, or long corridors, on each level that provide private balconies and extend the living space of each apartment. They also form a rainscreen, thermal and acoustic buffer zone.

Along with their practical benefits, the loggias create a visually engaging exterior envelope that makes the building appear far less imposing.

The architects specified Textura in white because of its highly glazed, granular surface finish which adds further visual interest to the secondary façade. The Textura cladding used on Simply 11 is frost proof and resistant to weather and atmospheric pollutants and has an installed life expectancy of 50 years.
