With a complicated roofing design covering some 1,700 sq metres, which had to incorporate a challenging design mixture of clay tiles, natural slate, concrete tiles and single ply flat roofing, the roofing contractors at the Lydgate Court Retirement Home development were able to find the complementary finish and performance they needed for the clay tile aspect of the contract, thanks to Marley Eternit’s handcrafted Ashdowne clay plain tiles.
The development’s location is situated in a conservation area within Bury St Edmunds, and as such, strict planning rules dictated that the finished roof needed to blend seamlessly within the surrounding location, as well as having to be placed alongside the other specified roofing products. This requirement called for a clay tile that could enhance the development whilst complementing the surrounding area which was ideal for Marley Eternit’s Ashdowne clay plain tile range.
Vince Hughes from roofing contractors Avonside Roofing, comments: “We had two main challenges on the Lydgate Court development. First, the complicated roofing design called for a mixture of roofing products which had to work well together and secondly, restrictive planning needs required the hi-specification buildings to sit well in their surroundings, therefore, we had to select a clay tile that provided a softer, natural and warm appearance. It also had to be cost effective without any compromise on quality. The Marley Eternit Ashdowne tile in the Ashurst colour ticked all these boxes.
“In addition, the design team behind the development were fully on board in the specification of the Ashdowne clay plain tile, as they agreed that it was exactly what they were looking for to realise the overall design vision for the roof in its location, and at a price that matched the budget”
Marley Eternit supplied over 60,000 Ashdowne tiles specified in the Ashurst colour for the Lydgate Court development.
Diana Bullock, campaign manager, said: “We are very happy that the Ashdowne clay plain tile has played a central role in the finished appearance at Lydgate Court. Its natural characteristics make it an ideal choice for such challenging locations where the need to blend into the surrounding location is a key consideration. Clay plain tiles such as Ashdowne lend themselves perfectly to such roofing design issues and the finished look delivers a great result for the developers and the people who will live at the retirement home.”
