Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
Our sense of social responsibility is rooted in our determination to keep our business aligned with the economic, social and environmental interests of society. These are inextricably linked to our own.
Our business can only succeed if we comply with the principles of sustainable development. Consequently, we must ensure that respect – for the people we work with, the communities we live in, and the environment we operate in - is at the very core of our activities.
Below are some examples of community activities that we are actively involved in:
Community Activities
At Burton upon Trent we reclaimed a disused sand quarry to the rear of our site, and transformed the land into a fishing lake and local beauty spot, which is now frequented by members of the public for leisure activities such as dog walking, angling and bird watching.
We sponsor the Burton Junior Football League, which has some 300 teams and approximately 5,000 children (aged 7-18) playing in its various league competitions every year throughout the football season.
Children at Edenhurst Independent Preparatory School, local to our clay plant at Keele were given the opportunity to exercise their creative flair by crafting their own ‘work of art’ out of clay. With Staffordshire being a centre of pottery production since the 17th century, clay is still a hugely important part of the local economy. Marley Eternit has supplied clay to the school so the pupils can discover the potential of this natural building material which plays such an important role in the region.
To gauge how we might improve the content for future issues of our Aspects newsletter a questionnaire was mailed out with Issue 2. A partnership has been formed with The Heart of England Forest projects, where we have pledged to plant a tree for every questionnaire response we receive. We will then provide the co-ordinates of the tree to the respondent so that they can watch their tree grow via Google Earth.
In Burton-upon-Trent, we have a concrete crushing facility that we use to re-process all of our waste concrete, back to aggregate, which we recycle into our concrete roof tile products. We identified that we had the potential to crush additional material, so we offered to take waste material from some similar companies in the local community, which we also crush and recycle for aggregate used in our production process, This benefits the local community because it helps to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill in the area.
Recruitment & Training
Our direct employees are mostly recruited from within communities local to our sites. We have over 800 direct employees within our business but create employment for many more within the local communities through our policy of sourcing materials and services from only local businesses wherever possible. Where our needs can not be met by a local company, we try to use national companies with operations local to our sites, to ensure our contribution to the local employment market and local economy is maintained at the highest possible level.
We have donated a quantity of roofing materials free of charge on a number of occasions to help support training programmes and develop roofing skills with local students. Recipients include:
- Bolton College
- South Lanarkshire College
- Skillbuild Finals
